Dr. Yashpal Sharma: A true karma‑yogi who lights up order in hospitals and humanity in society

To change society, God does not personally descend to the earth every time. Sometimes He comes in the form of a farmer, sometimes as a teacher, sometimes as a soldier, and sometimes as a person who silently fills the lives of thousands with light. There are some people who are not born merely to live their own lives, but to make others’ lives easier. Such people always stand out, even while standing in a crowd. Their faces carry no arrogance, their words no pretence, and yet their work is so vast that even time cannot forget them. From the soil of Jammu‑Kashmir, one such name is Dr. Yashpal Sharma. More than just a doctor, his name has become another name for service, discipline, management, sensitivity, and devotion to society. We are living in a very fast‑paced time. People are drifting away from their homes, from their relationships, from their villages, and slowly even from humanity. There was once a time when people lived their entire lives with their village’s soil pressed to their foreheads. Today people move into tall buildings and forget even the name of their village. But there are still some who, even after reaching great heights, never forget their roots. Dr. Yashpal Sharma is one of them. The higher the position he has reached, the more deeply he has stayed connected to his soil. That is why people see him not just as an official, but as the guardian of their own society. A simple child born in the narrow lanes of village Thiyal was hardly expected to become such a big name in the world of health administration. But it is said that when the intentions are pure, God Himself clears the path. Raised in a family of ten brothers and sisters, Dr. Yashpal Sharma never treated struggle as a curse; instead, he turned hardship into his strength. His father, the late Durga Dass Sharma, served in the armed forces, and from him Dr. Sharma inherited discipline, patriotism, and a spirit of service. These values later became the very identity of his personality. Today, when people hear the word “hospital,” they often think immediately of chaos, long queues, and troubles. At such a time, a person like Dr. Yashpal Sharma appears like a ray of hope. He has not only treated patients; he has taken it upon himself to reform the entire system of hospitals. He understood early on that a hospital does not run merely on medicines. Behind it lies the need for proper organisation, discipline, sensitivity, and strong management. That same mindset sets him apart from others. Studying at a prestigious institution like AIIMS, New Delhi, and earning a higher degree in hospital administration is not an easy task. But Dr. Sharma did not study just to add a degree to his name. He learned how to actually improve health services on the ground. He realised that a good doctor does not only treat patients; he also tries to strengthen the whole health system. That is why he chose administration as his weapon and has continuously worked to improve hospitals. Wherever new medical colleges are being set up in Jammu and Kashmir, wherever National Health Mission schemes are being implemented, whenever hospitals are being upgraded or the Medical Supply Corporation is being strengthened, his name is spoken with respect. He never simply gave orders from his desk; instead, he personally stepped into the field, understood the problems, and found solutions. That is why people do not see him merely as an officer, but as a true karma‑yogi. unlikely to be forgotten by the world. There was fear everywhere, chaos everywhere, and hospitals were in complete turmoil. At that time, many people were sitting in their chairs merely issuing orders, while a few were standing on the ground, trying to restore order. Dr. Yashpal Sharma was among those who played a crucial role in ensuring the availability of medicines, equipment, and health resources. In a time when people were afraid to step out of their homes, he worked tirelessly to save the lives of thousands. One of his greatest strengths has been that he never let administration drift away from humanity. In today’s world, people usually move away from the public once they gain a position, but Dr. Sharma’s life looks different. In him you can still see the simplicity of the soil of his village. Perhaps that is why people who meet him feel that they are not standing in front of a big officer, but in front of one of their own. The health camp held every year in his native village, Thiyal, is the most beautiful example of his thinking. Organised in the memory of his father, this is not just a medical camp; it is a tradition of service in which villagers feel both dignity and warmth. At a time when people are forgetting their villages, Dr. Sharma has kept his own village alive in his heart. This is not just social service; it is an expression of genuine love for his roots. Dr. Yashpal Sharma is not only a doctor or an administrator, but also a writer and a thinker. He has proved that knowledge is not something to be confined only to oneself. One who has seen the pain of thousands in life, one who has experienced the challenges of hospitals from close range, can only write that kind of literature that can guide society. In his books there are not only medical terms, but the truth of years of experience. On subjects such as hospital administration, health management, medical‑waste management, disaster management, and public health, he has written seriously and thoughtfully. His books explain that a hospital does not run merely on machines and walls. Behind it lie human emotions, discipline, and strong organisation. That is why his books are read not only by medical students, but also by health officials and social workers. The most beautiful thing about his writing is its simplicity. He explains even difficult topics in such an easy language that an ordinary reader can understand them. That is why his books do not remain locked in bookshelves; they reach people’s hands. In an age when reading habits are gradually fading, people like Dr. Sharma remind us that books still have the power to change society. In the present times, as Executive Director and Professor of the Department of Hospital Administration at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, Kakrayal, his role is extremely important. He has not only managed an institution; he has tried to give a new direction to health education and medical administration. Under his leadership, the institute has carved out a distinct identity in the fields of discipline, modern management, and quality. He has not just given students the knowledge of textbooks, but the experience of life as well. Students who study under his guidance do not leave only with degrees; they leave as sensitive health administrators. He teaches them that hospital administration is not just about files; it is about human responsibility. In his working style, there is both firmness and sensitivity. He believes in discipline to keep the system strong, yet he keeps humanity above everything else. That is why the people who work with him remember him with respect. Today there is a great shortage of people in society who care more about their work than about their position. Many people change once they get a chair, but there are some whose simplicity time itself cannot change. Dr. Yashpal Sharma is one of them. His success is not his alone; it also belongs to the thousands whose lives have become better because of his work. His story also teaches us that success does not belong only to big cities. Even a person who comes from a small village can, through sincere intentions and hard work, change the world. He has proved that if the heart carries a spirit of service, a person can create miracles in any field. At a time when society is slowly drifting away from empathy, people like Dr. Yashpal Sharma shine like hope. He reminds us that a human being’s real identity is not in his clothes, his titles, or his speeches, but in his actions. Looking at his life, it feels as if God did not send him just for His own sake, but for the sake of society. Some people are written in the pages of history books, and some are written in people’s hearts. Dr. Yashpal Sharma is one of those whose name will remain alive in people’s memories. Because he did not only manage hospitals; he upheld trust. He did not only run administration; he kept humanity alive. He did not only write books; he wrote inspiration for the coming generations. His journey is one of struggle, of service, of discipline, and of dedication. That is why today his name is not just the name of a person, but the name of an idea. An idea that says: if your intentions are pure, if your heart carries love for society, and if your actions are honest, then even an ordinary person can become a light in the lives of thousands. At first glance, one might think that someone seated on such a high pedestal must carry a certain ego, speak in big English words, and maintain distance from people. But when you meet him, all those assumptions vanish instantly. There is simplicity on his face, warmth in his words, and such humility in his behaviour that the person in front of him feels at ease immediately. Even after being such a senior health administrator and professor, there is not a trace of pretence in him. When he was once asked how he has managed to retain such simplicity after achieving so much in life, he just smiled and replied in a very simple line: “I have come to change something, I have come to give something to society.” That one line is enough to explain his entire personality. In an age when people wrap themselves in ego even after small achievements, Dr. Yashpal Sharma treats his achievements only as a means of serving society. Particularly for the youth, his life is an inspiration that teaches that true greatness lies not in high positions, but in humility, sensitivity, and the desire to do something good for society.
